What Is Reverse DNS?
Reverse DNS (rDNS) maps an IP address back to a hostname using PTR (Pointer) records. While regular DNS converts domain names to IP addresses, reverse DNS does the opposite. This is commonly used for email server verification, network troubleshooting, and security auditing. Many email servers perform reverse DNS lookups to verify that the sending server's IP has a valid PTR record matching its claimed hostname.
